Dr. Mark Johnson
Director - CAM
Clemson University
Prof. Mark Johnson is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing at Clemson University. His work focuses on clean-energy technologies and entrepreneurship in advanced manufacturing, new materials, and semiconductors. In his career, he has also been a federal government official and a technology entrepreneur.
In 2022, he was an Expert Advisor to the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) programs on Manufacturing Competitiveness and Industrial Decarbonization activities.
In 2019, he was the Fulbright-Hall Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Vienna (Austria)
From 2013-2017, he was the Director of Advanced Manufacturing Office for the US Department of Energy.
From 2010-2013, he was Program Director for the US Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E)
Earlier in his career, Prof. Johnson has been a co-founder or strategic member of the start-up team on three different venture capital-backed start-ups (with exits) in semiconductor products. (Nitronex, Quantum Epitaxial Designs, and EPI Systems.)
Prof. Johnson earned his Ph.D. from NC State and his SB from MIT, both in Materials Science and Engineering.
